The School of Engineering benefits from its multidisciplinary approach, with research covering a broad range of topics. The School employs some of the leading engineers in their field, who regularly publish papers in top ranking journals supported by over 150 students undertaking postgraduate research degrees. As a fully integrated department, we are able to promote and pursue cross collaborative research on a wide-scale. The School has a strong track record of collaborating with industrial and academic partners both in the UK and around the world. It was ranked 4th in the general engineering league tables in 2012, and was rated 3rd highest of the unified engineering departments in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise for General Engineering. Key themes of Energy, Biomedical and Cities provide a framework to the research efforts, which are underpinned by research strengths in 9 core engineering areas. The Sensors and Devices area targets applications from biomedical imaging and diagnosis through to gas sensing and flow field mapping. This wide range of applications arises from the unique sensors and imaging systems that the laboratories have developed. Central to this activity is the ability to design signals and image processing approaches that enable sensors to make measurements more reliably.

Prof. David Towers

3 David Towers has led research in 2 and 3D imaging employing interferometric, scattering and spectroscopic modalities. He adopts a holistic view, bringing together imaging and signal processing techniques, to deliver new capabilities that have led to breakthroughs in engineering, biological science and healthcare. 

Dr Natalia Anagrita-James


Natalia Angarita-Jaimes applies skills in algorithm design and optical imaging to turn the data obtained from novel optical imaging systems into useful information that characterises / phenotypes the behaviour of biological entities from organelles to organisms.
